school of course is out but that is no excuse for folks to travel 60 mph or more in front of aiken standard offices and aiken high school. there is a dangerous traffic situation there and i have written about it before. i do hope that the black vehicles purchased for emergency traffice enforcement can sit in aiken high school parking lot a little more often and check traffic. they can slow people down and perhaps help finances of ADPS in process. there aint nothing like a speeding ticket to slow down a scofflaw. especially when automobile insurance comes into play. the ADPS does a good job and this is not a criticism just a suggestion. god bless the officers of the ADPS and yall be careful out there.

lack of big lot retailers in aiken

i read the sunday article on the lack of big lot retailers in aiken sc all the misleading statements in the article and the excagerated statement that aiken wanted them. if aiken wanted them they would not put so many restrictions on location and other things such as traffic considerations on where they can locate. now i dont like a lot of traffic either but if you think these big lot retailers have to jump thru all these hoops aiken, sc puts in their way when they want to locate here, you are or have been smoking some weed. they dont NEED YALL yall need them.
if i were a big lot retailer i would tell aiken to forget it and go somewhere where i was wanted and was friendly to me. now if the folks in aiken want to control traffic congestion and where commercial establishments can locater and other restrictions, fine. BUT DO NOT TRY TO PRETEND YOU WANT THEM AND PUT A BIG ARTICLE ON FRONT PAGE OF NEWSPAPER SAYING SO. at least have the honesty to admit the truth. you have the right to put all the restrictions you want by law. thank god i live in the county where if i want to barbecue on saturday night, the county cant tell me i cant.
ADMIT YOU ONLY WANT BIG LOT RETAILERS ON YOUR TERMS ONLY and go about your business. dont lie and say you want them when you put all the roadblocks you can in their way. sams club recently was one prime example. at least you mentioned that in the article. i was surprised that you did really.

Does any one recall the “Alt Heidelberg Inn”? I know it was located in North Augusta and was still operating in the late 40’s, possibly even the 50’s. I found a postcard and old souvenier menu from there in my grandmothers things, but it is not dated. I do however have original pictures dated 1944 and know it was close to a river or large creek. Just curious since my grandmother lived and worked there for many years. I’ve never been to the area so it really peaked my curiosity when I saw the beautiful pictures.

school is out for the year. hope all the students have a nice summer and wish the graduates well wishes for their future. that being said the speed zone in front of aiken high school is still 40 mph. there aint no stand there with a flagman waving a flag symbolizing the beginning of a nascar race. it is 40 mph from red light on number 1 highway to past the phelon plant going toward aiken augusta highway. i cannot believe all the scofflaws who rip and roar down that highway in plain defiance of laws established to assure order and boundaries within a civilized society.
i know those special black police units could park in aiken high school parking lot on a random basis and do a landslide business. i hope they do. there is no excuse for such wise disregard of traffic laws. i myself am not perfect but i try to obey speed laws in areas in aiken for they are there for a reason. i urge the aiken department of public safety to enforce these speed limits and ensure folks do what is right even if it hurts them in the pocketbook. most of these folks know the speed limits and ignore them blatantly and foolishly. there is no excuse for this. come on folks do what is right obey the law and keep all the points on your licence. god bless america and god bless our law enforcement community.
KUDOS TO THEM FOR DOING A GREAT JOB.

Energy Attack

I’m warning you that this post is going to sound a little nuts, some will say paranoid. But, here it is…
Energy in the U. S. is the new terror attack on Americans. Radical Muslims attacked us on 9/11 and then saw our vicious response. Think about it - who will slap us in the face now? So, the tactic has changed. First, they tried to turn Iraq into a civil war hoping that killing enough of our children (soldiers) would turn us away but it didn’t despite the liberal media’s best efforts. They have found a more effective way to beat us… energy. Check out Dubai on the internet and see how they are spending our money. They are so filthy rich, they are building islands in the water so they can build the largest buildings for business and entertainment in the world. That’s not the only things they are spending money on. They have bought thousands of businesses right here in this country; sent thousands of their children to our colleges that our kids can’t afford; invested billions of dollars in our stock market. Then we turn around and provide military protection to their countries.

The sad thing is that our own media, much of it owned by foreigners, is complicit in their actions. All we hear is, “Greedy oil companies” are running us into the poorhouse and “Bush and Cheney are killing our kids for oil!” Well, we haven’t taken a drop of Iraqi oil and the oil companies are making about 25 to 30 cents - yes, cents - per gallon of gas. That amounts to billions of dollars in oil company profits. How much are the foreign entities making then? Trillions! How is that happening? The media is in the pocket of Democrats or vice versa. The Dems won’t let us drill our own oil that would at least cycle the money within our own country. Check out how much the Dems are accepting from foreign entities in the form of political contributions and speaking fees. Sure, there are some Republicans doing the same. I share my criticism with them also. But put the numbers in context. On the last vote to drill in our own back yard, 86% Dems opposed, 86% Repubs favored. Since the Dems have control (media and both houses of Congress), the measure to drill was defeated. So, enjoy $4.00 - on the way to $5.00 - gas prices and go see the miracles being performed in Dubai. There is much more to this topic but I know it’s hard to maintain concentration on political items. Well, it is for me anyway.

Flush the System

I wrote an letter to the Aiken Standard Editor a year or two ago about the education system in America and did a lot of research on it’s fall from supremacy. Some U. S. colleges are still among the best in educating the brightest people of the world but for grades 1 thru 12 we have dropped to number 14 (I believe that was a 2002 statistic posted by CBS News). Like any government institution, education has become a self serving entity except with a strong national union to protect even the most unproductive workers. Don’t get me wrong. I think there are many excellent teachers in our system but they are that because of their own work ethic. There is no incentive other than personal motivation to be a “good” teacher. You get a standard salary mostly depending on years of service. Over the years, the system has been increasingly focused on the teachers rather than the students. Think about it… do teachers get more money for raising their students’ SAT scores? No. Do they get more money by buying more education via degrees and becoming administrators? Yes!

So, how about the kids? Grades are dropping and have been for years. More students drop out than ever. More STD’s than ever before despite (or because of) mandatory sex education and condoms. Socialization has crept into every aspect of teaching. For example, reading, writing, and arithmetic are taught from grades K1 thru college. How much is really needed? Don’t you think every child should have a good grasp of writing and reading by eighth grade? So, why do we need to require another 3 or 4 years of English in high school and another year in college? One reason is to provide more teacher positions that are not really measureable by any standard. Another is because teachers get to force kids to read whatever liberal dribble the teacher decides is important. Things have changed. We used to read classics by Shakespeare, American writers, etc. Go check out reading lists at USC Aiken. You will not recognize required reading assignments like Kundiata…

What else has changed for K-12 programs? No recess for the kids; no phys ed; no auto shop; no woodworking; no metal shop; less money for music programs; no autocad, programming languages, or other technical training that could help you get a job. The bottom line is our kids cannot get training that can help them become part of the working force unless it’s in the education cycle.
